"AKHETRI" Akshyatritya is celebrated as the Birthday of Vasuki Naga

Bhadarwah town of Jammu Province in J&K India is known as Nagabhumi Bhaderkashi. There are many historical  heritages present here which testify that every particle of Bhaderwah is ingrained with eternal Nag culture. Maharaj Vasuki Nag ji is considered as the supreme Naga among all the Nagas except Shesh Naga(elder brother of Vasuki Nag ji).
Other Nag deities that include Subar Nag, Chaturbhuj Nag, Mel Nag, Nagni Mata are also worshiped as village deity and clan deity by the people in entire Bhadewah.
People here believe that Kashyapa Rishi and all the Naga children of Kadru were born on the day of Akshayatriya.  People here call Akshayratiya by the name of "Akhetri". People here celebrate this auspicious occasion of Akhetri with great fervor in every Hindu home, Suji halwa and Yellow rice are made and offered in Nag temples. Mainly, a supernatural glimpse of this auspicious day is seen in Vasakdehra(a place situated in heart of Bhadarwah town). Vasakdehra is considered to be the Garh of Vasuki Nag ji. It is said that Vasuki Nag Ji's court used to be at this place.Presently there is a historic temple of Bhagwan Maharaja Vasukinag ji in Vasakdehra, whose composition and architecture can be seen as a glimpse of Pahadi culture. The temple has two ancient idols of black color which are also shown in the picture, the idol on the right side is of Vasukinag Ji himself and on the left is the idol of Vidyadhar Naresh Raja Jamut Vahan Ji who was the best friend of Vasukinag ji.In the war between the Garud Deva and the Nagas, peace was established by Vidyadhar Naresh Raja Jamut Vahan ji.This is the reason that Vasukinag ji gave Raja Jamut Vahan ji equal place with him.
The conclusion of all these facts define that this temple was built after the war between Garuda Dev and Nag Devas.
On the day of Akhetri (Akshayatriya), the religious devotees of Bhadarwah make grand decorations in the temple, the idols are dressed in traditional ornaments the people here offer Vasukinag ji's traditional dresses "Bagge" which are of different colors.
J&K Dharmarth Trust created by Maharaja Gulab Singh, the Founder of J&K in 1846 is the caretaker of this holy place and traditional ornaments.
On this day, here all the religious devotees contribute on their behalf and a huge Bhandara is organized, apart from this, a "Vishwa kalyan yagya" (Yajna) is also performed by the Rajpurohit Kul of Bhaderwah.
On this day, the Zamindars of Bhadarwah do not plow in their fields and dedicate this holy day to Lord Vasuki Nag Ji Maharaj.
